PGA HOPE brings healing through golf to Tulsa-Area veterans

Like other sports, golf provides a mental challenge, offers scenic surroundings and can be played by people of all abilities and ages.
Posted on the office wall of Josh Stewart, director of golf at LaFortune Park Golf Course and South Lakes Golf Course, is a vision board for 2025: to host the largest PGA HOPE program in the state.
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) introduces and teaches golf to veterans and active-duty military members to improve their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. The program is led by PGA of America golf professionals for a six to eight week curriculum.
“The program will have all skill levels from participants who have never touch a golf club to those who have played for years,” Stewart explained. “It's an introduction to golf that covers the basics – swings, setup, posture and stance.” More experienced players will focus on refining their skills.
The program is free to all participating veterans and active-duty military members.
One program ambassador described PGA HOPE as a form of therapy for participants. The program has impacted more than 17 thousand veterans nationwide since 2017
“It’s an opportunity for them to come out a couple hours each week and disconnect from the world,” Stewart said. “They have been through more than we can even imagine, mentally and physically.”
PGA HOPE programs can be facilitated at any golf course. LaFortune Park Golf Course will be hosting three sessions in 2025: one in spring, summer and fall. Each session will take place on Saturday mornings.
“Our goal at Tulsa County Parks is not just to maintain beautiful green spaces but to ensure that these spaces serve everyone in our community, including our veterans. Our broader mission is to create environments where all individuals—regardless of age, ability, or background—can find a sense of belonging and well-being. By partnering with organizations like PGA HOPE at LaFortune Park Golf and South Lakes Golf, we are able to directly support the men and women who have served in our military, offering them a space for healing, connection and recreation,” said Matt Hancock, Tulsa County parks director.
South Lakes Golf Course will also host programs in the summer and fall.
Veterans can sign up by visiting South Central PGA to find a program nearby. If a session is full, individuals will be placed on a waiting list.
The spring 2025 program is already fully booked. Participants may bring their own clubs, or a set will be provided for the session by the clubhouse at no charge.
Summer and Fall sessions will be announced soon.
